We were in Dungarpur for a photo shoot of a project I had taken up about the life and journey of my grandfather Pannalal Patel. This last place was left to shoot, it was aready evening and suddenly it started raining.
Here we were standing under a small shed of a chemist shop. The water was coming into the camera so we requested the shop owner to give is some polythene bags to cover it. This was the time when polythene bags where strickly banned.
This shop owner showed us the typical black polythene bags which are used to buy sanitary napkins in India, asking us if we did not mind using those. We were like ‘why would we mind if it saves our equipment?’, we covered our cameras with them and started clicking photos of people passing by. I never understand why we need to hide sanitary napkins in opaque black bags over here as if we are smugling cocaine or booze to our home. I never understand why having your periods is a taboo? If God has give us this body so has he give everything else, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Well for me it is a gift beacause of that I could give birth to a beautiful child. I never ask for the black bags at the chemist, I tell the chemist keep them for the environment.
Back to my camera covered with this black bag. Its was pouring, the water collected on the shed was falling on my back, half wet but camera saved, suddenly I saw these boys running bare feet on the roads. They looked liked they where running into Paradise, they looked so free. This Monsoon I am going to do that play with my son in the rains bare feet, the feeling is so pure…
This picture reminds me the part of John Galt’s speech
“that somewhere in the starting years of your childhood, before you had learned to submit, to absorb the unreason and to doubt the value of your mind, you had know a radiant state of existence, you had known the independence of rational consciousness facing the open universe. That is the PARADISE you have lost, which you seek- which is yours for taking…
“The CHOICE IS YOURS to make….
“The choice is still open to be human being, but the price is to START FROM SCRATCH to stand naked in the face of reality and reversing a costly historical error, to declare: ‘I am human, therefore I’ll think'”
I choose reason because I value my existence. I choose to live in Paradise…Do you?
