My little one is trying to learn to walk thus these days all the time he wants to stand holding on to some furniture. I have to stand behind him making sure, in case he misses his balance and to stop his fall. Thus when he is awake I just can’t do anything and at night time when he is fast asleep I am exhausted to do anything else. This is the reason new updates are taking time….I wonder what will happen when he starts walking. I can’t wait for him to start walking but Its going to be more exhausting than what it is now. But on the bright side, I will be able to lose my last two kgs and the unwanted pregnancy tyres which are left. I also call my son my weight loss program ! Thanks to him, I am back to my original pre pregnancy pants but the truth is once I wear them I cannot breathe in them…they are still tight !
Few days back I watched the movie Julie & Julia. Its a real life story of Julie Powell and her mentor Julia Child. They have never met and it’s through her cooking books, her TV shows that Julie worships Julia Child and takes up a challenge to cook all Julia Child’s recipes from her book “The Art of French Cooking.” She decides to cook more than 500 recipes in a year and starts blogging about it. It’s how Julie gets a direction in her boring life. It also shows how she saves her self by getting inspired by her mentor Julia Child. The movie is so well-directed and edited that I have seen it a few times.
Another reason I love this movie is cause I feel it’s my story and the story of how I am influenced by my mentor Sir Raju Hirani. I love his movies so much and watching them over and over again have helped me become a better, happier and a secure person. It has helped me find direction in my life and it’s only through his films that I have learned to see only the positive side of life and to do what I love. I strive for excellence in my life. Success will follow if it’s in my destiny. Sometimes I wonder I hope I do not get OCD cause I have become a tough task master!
Plus after watching this movie, I realised I am not the only mad person. I talk about my mentor and his movies so much as if I know him and my very patient husband listens to me when I talk the same things over and over again.
Honestly before the movie I did not know how big Julia Child was. That day I kept on thinking about the movie and suddenly I remembered I have Julia child’s book. My friends Parul and Niranjan had gifted me after my trip to Paris as I went on and on how I wanted to get introduced to French cooking. I was looking for a cookbook in Paris and Niranjan said he will look for me and send it. After few months Parul brought me this book when she visited India. What would I do in my life without such inspiring and caring friends? I am a better and a smarter person thanks to having them in my life. Thank you husband dearest cause Parul is his childhood friend.
The book was just lying there in my book shelf for almost 2 years. I never cooked from it cause I thought it would be all meat. Well no explanations, I forgot about it ! When I opened this book, I realised it has lots of vegiteranian recipes.
An idea came to me that why don’t I cook a French dish from Julia Child and then cook something similar to that from my Indian cuisine.
I had already cooked mushroom pulav few days back. So now I decided to cook mushroom rice from Julia Child’s book. I wanted to experience different cultures to realise eventually we all are so similar…
The French rice is the exact recipe of Julia Child. Only thing I added was chilli flakes as my husband Sid, who is an Indian at heart needs chilli in his food…
Indian recipe of mushroom pulav was inspired by my blogger friend Liz which I am sharing her link below:
Mushroom pulav recipe:
2 cups cooked long grain rice
1 medium size onion cut julian
1 cup boiled green peas
1 packet of mushrooms chopped
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 stick of cinnamon
4 whole black pepper cones
1 tsp turmeric powder
2-3 tsp red chilli powder
1 tbsp garam masala
2 tbsp oil
Heat the oil in a non stick pan and add the onions and cook them till they are brown.
Add the cinnamon, cloves, black pepper and cook for a few seconds.
Add the mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes or till the mushrooms are done. Add the green peas and rest of the ingredients.
Cook till the spices raw smell goes.
Remove from the heat, add the rice and mix with a fork carefully so that the rice doesn’t break.
Put it again on the heat and cook for another 2 minutes.
Remove and serve with raita.
p.s. I personally liked the French version better. It also looks better.
